Legend of Oz: The Wicked West Fanart
So I wanted to do a piece for Big Dog Ink's Legend of Oz: The Wicked West, and thought about doing an homage cover - which I've never done. I've only ever done one image in my scraps on DA. Anyhow, I considered the following (all x-men covers lol)
oddly enough I always remembered this cover as a mix of this and the first appearance of the white queen.
My wife mentioned that perhaps they were't as universal and suggested Abbey Road from the Beatles. I ended up going with Amazing Spider-man 129 - don't ask me how anyone besides spider-man falling off a building would get into this mid-air position, lol. Anyways, it will be in the back of the next issue but here it is too. I was very pleased with it, though I added some of the yellow-bricks from the road falling in the background but I'm not sure they read as such in black and white, otherwise it was very fun.

Oportunity knocking on my door - and I'm ready
ive been looking for some odd jobs etc to help out with money and found a few, some without even looking, and I thought I might tell you all the exciting news.
One guy is opening a straight-edge tattoo shop and wants me to do a mural on one of the walls- he will pay for supplies, food let me hang my art for sale and give me 50% tattoos (which i will take him up on for sure).
Also Tom Lyle, my super-hero mentor, at scad got asked to suggest an artist for Faber Castell (the main supplier of inking supplies like the "pit-pens" that I normally use and the tech-pens most sequential artists use) who was looking at someone to do an original comic page for them for a new "super-hero drawing kit" they are releasing later this year. Lyle suggested me, saying I was one of "the most dynamic main-stream super-hero artist that he's got" as far as camera angles etc. So I have the break (2 1/2 weeks to do a single page comic with an original super-hero that I have to pencil, ink and color it with their stuff and document it at every stage as an instructional guide. They may use the image in other things as well and I will be additionally compensated each time. Did I mention it paid and I also get a $100 faber castell gift certificate. Wow, I'm honored and blown away! My art is going to be seen by up and coming youngsters getting into comics and people in hobby/art stores around the country <--- awesome!
Also, I did some pages for Tom's class that are my best yet and I believe professional quality, AT LAST! So I will be sending out submission packets to Marvel and DC over break so they have my name in mind, for when they come in may for Editor's Day. Here are my breakdowns etc. for those pages. another thing, I actually did the same pages tom did for his submission packet about a year ago (sensational spider-man 34), so with his permission I'll post/link his pages with mine so you all can compare. But overall I think I've finally done some pages that really show my best that I have to offer in every way and I was super ambitious with some of the camera choices and spent about (20-30hrs) = 3 times as much time on them as I have for the last 2 projects. But this quarter, in general, I've spent more time on my pages progressively so I think this has been a long time coming/in the making.
so this is the sketch i gave myself, full page, to layout the splash and then did the following page, the actual tight rough, on the back.

this was a in-class assignment, we used lyle's cars to draw the hulk holding one, as dynamic as we could. I did a thumb and liked it so much i took it down to the projector and blew it up and got the one on the left. I liked it.
this was some other sketches i did for panels 1+2 on pg.1 and panel 5 on page 3 when i thought about shooting it over the railing of the second story. and a sketch of myself while working on the pages and taking a break, i know i look tired but i was just cold.

spidey tight roughs
heres my tight roughs at 8 1/2 x 11 for my spidey pages.
1/20/09, i finished the final pages in 5 1/2 hrs before class, check them out here. it still has some of the same problems as the tights, no hand on electro on the 1st page, and i messed the proportions of the thug multiple times, but that splash came out nice, and the multi figure panel on teh second page was nice too.

Spidey tights and Darket Night review
http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/ if you haven't seen this website you should, it made me sick to my stomach to think about all the people, artists, that, as they say on the website "are being ripped off because they are counting on the fact that the original artists are too scared and feel it would be too expensive to take them to court." The people at this website think differently and help to exploit and expose these cheaters who are getting paid for these knockoff mass marketed designs.
I sent Tom Lyle my script from last year about Batman and my take on how Joker would eventually drive him crazy, i will not reveal the details but do have Lyle's comments on the script for which I received similarly positive remarks from Mark, for who's class I wrote it in the 1st place.
He said I understand Batman well, and that what happened in the script would happen, given what Joker does to Batman. Because the script was only 14 (comic) pages long and I had up to 7 panels per page he said I could easily stretch it to 22 pages and have time to play with pacing and payoffs a little more, which I will do. He also was nice enough to send the script back with a few grammatical corrections and some lines he felt I didn't need, or were to overt and even highlighted them in red. He thinks I had them talking too much but it was a scripting class, he said it was just an opinion because he felt Batman should always be a man of few words, concise and to the point. But he did say he liked the concept, he liked the pacing, I kept true to the characters, and that DC would never publish it because batman is guilty of murder by the end.
Also here are my thumbnails (4 to an 8 1/2x11) for an entire unpublished issue of Spider-man of which I will actually be penciling the first 3.

I also wrote a 15 page script for a play for my "writing fundamentals for the stage and screen" class, which I will be read out loud next class by students. The assignment was a 5 pg minimum, 3 characters, starts with an explosion and one location. I will post the class' and my teacher's opinions, as well as send the script to Aaron because I feel it could really be produced and it would be good and easy, and see what he has to say. I had a few troubles with the title but i settled on "two stories."

Long time, no post -sorry
So we finished leon in class and talked about bleed pages, I mentioned I liked charest but lyle hates him – says he is just pinups. But he is the best, an awesome illustrator we all agreed but his storytelling and layout is confusing – says lyle.
We got done early and all the student met about the scripts, I waited till last and did my in class assignment that was going to be homework. I brought it to him, he also mentioned that we will have t oink a few pages, and he said “when did you do this, during the movie? I said id been sitting there for 20 mins, he said “holly crap you laid out 4 pages in 20 mins. Glanced over them and said, your storytelling has really improved, you are making some really quick really good decisions, he looked at my layout and pointed out a few minor things but said he liked the look of the pages and that they were very nice, he’s going to help me with some of the more difficult perspective shots, but that I should use more angles. And I know, it was like once the summer came and I started doing layouts for 3 issues of comics all I wanted to do was move the camera side to side and up or down but never tilt up or down. My brain wasn’t in it. All summer I had procrastinated doing work, guilty about it though. I did a lot of personal art which I liked allot, very introspective though usually sad but it cheered me up and it kept me drawing. So letting that go was hard, I do have a project in art history that could tie back into that though so – yay! but i cant post or show most of it because i don't want any one to think different of me, or how i view them - its personal but like i said it kept me drawing and it kept me from getting too depressed, it came out of my pencil instead of my mouth and that is good. Over the summer I was writing and doing a lot of james work for him but I am freakishly fast, for a student, less than average for a pro but im getting better. I had seen mike manely site and that he had done 2-3 pages a day for quasar and was inking alpha fight at the same time, now I don’t know if I could do that consecutively but I have done 5 pages in about 12 hours and did it multiple times in larrison’s class, including lettering. Now if I did that during the day I could probably go even faster not being so dragged out and tired.
Here’s a layout for a dps sketch I did of spiderman I really liked, kind of has the live action tv 60’s eyes, like cassiday did on giant size astonishing x-men, though seeing his black and whites he does leave a lot of backgrounds out or even insert photocopies for backgrounds sometimes of large city shots. But his characters look great and there is some awesome layout stuff in latter issues of that series, im only missing issue 24 now before I go and read it. Anyway, wanted it to be a kind of tour de force of inking techniques and I figured it would be big enough I could ease into brush stuff, there’s a cool video on using a razor to add texture on manely’s site → drawman.blogspot.com
