Hawking - disabled comicI loved drawing and making Stephen Hawking for Blue Water but the lettering/script and my not leaving enough space didn't make much of a finished readable comic. Here's some of the pages, the worst being the one where the lettering is right over the hands in the middle of the page. I'm very proud of the art, specifically a boat rowing page - I insisted on inking this one because of how the others had gone. I'm pretty sure most comic shops don't carry Tidal wave as they are now called because of their reputation for books like this and not paying their artists (also like this) but I found these floating around the web and it's almost half the issue so I figured I'd post my learning experience.

I worked on an indie game for a while doing character and backgrounds. I did some fill-in pages for a friend, as well as layouts for an ongoing series - which I'm really enjoying. Alterna's Crime Anthology hits shops on the 22nd - which I have a story in, and Chaser Platoon came out last month (which I colored). <br.><br.>
Decisions relaunched with the issue I wrote this year and Yurushi is going into Diamond in the near future. I finished a small personal project - kind of a tweenage kid's book I'm going to try and get out there with illustrations as well. <br.><br.>
I made a pitch packet with a writer that we're shopping around and am working on another. I also did a piece for the Tales From the Gutter Kickstarter that made it into the pinups section - which just came out a few days ago. <br.>
And there's this: An interview I read with Ron Marz at least 7-8 years ago (and the issue was probably 5 yrs old at that point) and it made such an impact on me I held onto the issue of Write Now! telling myself I'd find this issue (which can be fairly expensive) and growing an ever larger collection of Claudio Castellini's other comics. I photoshoped the text from the page break and around a picture together to read his thoughts but when I read how long it had taken him to do it made an impact and I felt I owed it to an artist I loved to see something that had taken him that long to create. And, sadly its everything he described it as - beautiful and woefully underprinted/colored. The interesting thing is the lettering is printed sharp. It's just enough to let you know it could've been so much more. The back cover and the first splash pages show just how different even a rudimentary coloring job could've looked and pages have come out online of the original black and white art - which turns up mostly gray in the book itself (looking more like pencil lines than ink)<br.><br.>

This guy makes Byrne Hogarth look like he didn't enjoy drawing knobby hands and anatomy. So much great stuff in the issue - you can tell he was trying to outdo himself, but I believe it was Alan More who said to Dave Gibbons after hearing how long it took him to draw the Killing Joke, and I'm paraphrasing - "It took you two years to make and I'm going to read it on the toilet in 10 mins." It really does need an artist's edition or a oversized, hardback reprint.<br.><br.>
On my end Chaser Platoon was kind of darkly colored (over inkwash) and printed even darker, but I feel I was able to add something to it. I did try to make it as colorful as I could, though it would've been easy to keep the whole thing army green and steel gray. The panel I feel I added the most to is below, where a character is reflecting deeply, with a split light source.<br.><br.>

Also got to paint this with my student's help and have been inspired to tackle large paintings like this after seeing Drew Struzan and Bob Peak use pencils over their airbush and paints. I probably used a bit too much, but it still came out pretty nice considering its only the 2nd canvas painting I've ever done. <br.>

Here's a few logo options we gave Outcast angels - I really liked playing up making the g and e in "angels" to look like wings. Also some designs I did for a friend's Illusionist show - <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MindBlownReality/">Lincoln</a>.<br.>

The bird logo for Prospect ridge academy has been used a lot - which is great. Villain designs, layouts, panels, thumbnails sketches etc. I did up a few controllers for my friends. Had to basically redraw the lower half of the cover for the Endless Incident and even then one of the figures got redrawn by the inker, but I understand the cover means a lot to the book so it's got to just be right. <br.>

Also had a double page spread layout that I got a little too into and ended up having the reader going top to bottom in the middle, then along the bottom towards the right, then up the right hand side, then right to left by the end. it was a little too much. Also stacked a panel on the left in the graphic novel that needed one of those 70's style arrows down so readers didn't get confused.<br.>

Here's basically the layout "blobs" I do before putting down my final lines. Also a few comparrisons from the cover, which I haven't shown yet of some redraws - had to work on an outstretched 4 finger claw hand and on Ashini and her hand on the hip pose in the background.
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MmZx-Ok-Gsg/Va70Mxm32DI/AAAAAAAACnA/sgCas7DKLko/s1600/2015-06-25%2B13.15.34.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MmZx-Ok-Gsg/Va70Mxm32DI/AAAAAAAACnA/sgCas7DKLko/s320/2015-06-25%2B13.15.34.jpg" /></a>
And here's the sketch out for the Shadowpact commission - to show about how far I go before inking when I'm my own inker.
Here's the final <a href="http://xaqbazit.deviantart.com/art/Shadowpact-543604560">http://xaqbazit.deviantart.com/art/Shadowpact-543604560</a>xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-77672641964063580902015-07-01T17:54:00.002-07:002015-07-01T18:17:42.144-07:00Artists who are new to me - and goodYou'll have to forgive me but most of these references are to 80's and early 90's comics. <br.>
Dan Jurgens is at his best when he as Jerry Ordway inking him - he catches some stuff Breeding doesn't and isn't as heavy handed.<br.>
I'm getting into just about everything Tim Truman has done recently.<br.>
I don't much care for Mike Grell as an artist but he can write a hell of a crime comic. <br.>
Really starting to like Rick Bruchett and how simple and slightly exagerated his stuff is, especially when he inks himself. <br.>
Mike Zeck is pretty cool, though I guess half of Secret Wars layouts were dictated by shooter but I thought that large scale comic was handled excellently by him. <br.>
Dael Keown is someone that I thought was cool when I was a kid with his super polished veiny mega muscle characters at image and top cow but I really think his best work was on his early Hulk stuff. <br.>
Alan Davis' ealy style had little black placement and I used to have a whole trade of something he did with a short haired Phoenix, Captain Britan etc that I didn't care for. But after Clandestine he started some heavy black placement and I think his stuff has gotten even more beautiful as he's aged. Mark Farmer always does bang up work with him and his diagonal action panels really are amazing, from his layouts down to their gestures and poses. <br.>
You can't hear enough about Jon Buscema but I really didn't know his work specifically since so many tried to imitate him but his downturned mouths are a pretty dead giveaway, though I think he's at his best when he is inking himself or like anyone Al Williamson was inking him. The quality of his finished work varies greatly based on who was finishing/inking/embellishing over him, from Ernie Chan to Alfredo Alcalla to others he probably worked with just about everybody and did a lot, though I've seen some of the layouts he was giving out and how loose they were. Its amazing he was able to keep the volume of his work still feeling fresh and not to repetitive. <br.>
Whilace Portacio is another guy you have to find in the right time period his work is all over the place, from terrible to amazing and it seems it changed about every 3-5 years. Though my favorite period was his stuff on X-men (around the time Marrow was created) and Avenger Forever when Liquid coloring really came in big.
Also apparently the Kubert brothers were just stepping out of the shadow of their father in the 80's but I saw them do everything from coloring to inking to penciling etc on various books, mostly DC at the time. Really liked Adams work on Johnny Quest though you can tell by the brushy inks it was very heavily influenced by his father at the time, who I also love. Joe's layouts always amaze me how he's able to fill the page in an interesting way, like it'd be hard to find a boring Joe Kubert page and at the same time he leaves things fairly rough and undetailed. He puts just enough detail in to let you know he knows what he's drawing and you can identify it but not enough that he couldn't ink it with a brush.<br.>
Steve Lightle is someone I need to find some more stuff from but I saw a 1/2 isue of Marvel Comic Presents Ghost Rider/Wolverine that blew me away.
Also made a big fool of myself on Deviantart confusing trying to praise both Tom Palmer and Bill Reinhold on their respective pages on the same day and mixing eachothers work up with one another and being called out on it by them - yikes! Speaking of which I appologize about all the name misspellings on here, this is half an "inspiration Journal" for me so I don't forget some of these guys and 1/2 wanting to let you guys find out about them. Though I've heard these names 1,000 times I never made the connections so I'm probably the last to know, but now I know.
Lastly the IF anthology from Alterna is just about out, though it feels like I did those pages a year ago or more - will have a story called "Signs of Life" in it, alongside artwork from Novo Malgapo - who I liked a great deal.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-8677534092803403422015-06-24T12:29:00.001-07:002015-06-24T12:29:58.583-07:00The Endless Incident finally endedWell it took me quite a while but I did it. 124pgs of penciled artwork plus a few redraws. About the equivalent of a 6 issue arc on a regular book with a monthly deadline. I only got off by about 2 weeks across the entire book, and that was partially for being hospitalized for a health issue part way through. I'll be slowly posting artwork over the next few days on deviantart.<br.>
We did end up redesigning the villain about halfway through the book after I'd already drawn him a handful of times, but that is probably for the best since I'm really proud of how he turned out. Though he doesn't get too much screen time I think he makes an impact when he gets his 5 minutes of fame.<br.>
I think my favorite pages were the ones where I got to add something to the storytelling, or pages with just some nice figure work or faces/hands. I flew through a lot of comic books looking for ideas on blocking and acting and layouts etc. I came to know a lot of artists I didn't before, I'll post some of those names later.<br.>
I also bought quite a few comics while on the book to keep me seeing fresh artwork and keep ideas flowing- though I seem to be expanding my collection horizontally, more from the same time period then in linear chronological order. I've found my favorite thing to find for cheap is the old Conan comic magazines from the mid to late 80's. <br.>
I tried to keep my exposure to certain artists limited because of how quickly they influence my style, like Klaus Janson's pencils or Walt Simonson. When I was stuck and couldn't come up with poses flashing through a few Rick Leonardi comics loosened me back up into a gestural figure drawing mode that helped a lot.<br.>
I tried a few things, like circular panels, that I've never done before. Other that the predesigned main cast and monsters everything else was basically on the fly. Though as I went on it became increasingly important to look back on how I drew it before to keep it the same in current pages.<br.>
Al Sirois, the inker and writer, helped me get started doing some layouts for me after I sent some to him that didn't give with him. The first few pages were mostly characterless and that was tough for me. Nearly my entire interest in drawing lies in drawing people and it probably shows. Even so, I doubbled my efforts when drawing those first few pages to try and cover that fact. Al also helped design the submersible that shows up later in the book. <br.>
While doing the book I was able to do a few pages for Dream State which I should be getting back to soon, and some commissions via the internet since I didn't make it to any conventions this year. I also did a pitch packet for another guy (5pgs, a cover and a promo piece penciled and inked and tweaked with the coloring) and did the Outcast Angels cover.<br.>
The pages for the Endless Incident as with most major projects I assume were a challenge. There were a lot of talking scenes in a circular conference room and trying to not repeat the same angles was really tough. I do think my favorite thing to do is break a single background into multiple panels with characters either moving through it or breaking that scene into smaller panels that appear, together, somewhat like a splash page or large panel. Leaving space for dialog was also tricky with a team of characters. Felt like drawing the x-men or avengers or something at times.<br.>
The writer as fast to respond to questions which helped and I turned in pages once a week. I did pretty well as far as back and hand pain considering I gave away my drawing table before moving and have instead been working at a table or on the couch with a large piece of cardboard as a backer. And I did eventually figure out when to switch my tools which I hadn't really done before, though I still only use a mechanical pencil or regular pencil, an mars-steadler white eraser and an eraser pencil. I occasionally used a ruler for panel boarders but generally just eyeballed it in and Al made sure to straighten them up in the inks.<br.>
I'll be interested to see how they look when published and see certain pages side by side and secondly what they look like digitally chopped up since they will also be used for a game in a comixology-like interface. I started trying to keep the "widescreen" panel format about the same ratio of a screen without any panels that were too tall or wide. But I quickly ran out of ideas and was also trying to keep it interesting for myself and reading in print, so I strayed from that the further it went. I tried to keep one panel a page or so boarderless. And had to kick myself a few time to pull back and not just stick to headshots/busts- luckily the design of the characters kept them distinct even to the point that I could cut to sillhouette and still tell them all apart, which was a great help. Sometimes they were in their "space suits" and not their "costumes/armor" but again they all had different haircuts etc and so it was really easy to keep them seperate.<br.>xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-34315317762974692992015-03-21T07:38:00.001-07:002016-01-24T11:19:50.055-08:00New InspirationsI've rescently been flying threw a ton of comics as I'm drawing - here are some of the guys that are making me excited to draw.<br.>
Brian Stefleeze - always helps me find directionin my own color work when I'm stuck.<br.>
Claudio Castellini - Amazing hands, faces and angles. Very dynamic and interesting focus on ribcages.<br.>
Rodolfo Damaggio - went on to do storyboards but if you're lucky enough to find his comics they read so easily and feel like a film without feeling slavish imitations of another artform.<br.>
Marcos Marz <br.>
Marco chechetto <br.>
Eduardo Barreto - reminds me quite a bit of Jose Luise Garcia Lopez.<br.>
Steve Epting - 90's Avengers is great stuff - amazing team shot splash pages.<br.>
Alan Davis - couldn't stand him when I first saw his work but I think his stuff from the last decade is about as good as it gets. Amazing layouts, awesome smooth rendering - with help from his inker Mark Farmer - and it all has a certain texture - like pre-Bryan Hytch.<br.>
Tom Raney - on Avengers Academy has been pretty good.<br.>
The ones I've mentioned before but can't stop going back to - Lee Weeks, Ron Garney - can't beat their layouts and solid figure construction - and Andy/Adam Kubert.<br.>
Butch Guice - his work on dc/marvel all access seems to be my favorite stuff of his. So much acting with hands and faces in every panel. I tried resurection man which came right after but it doesn't look like they could keep an inker on him and it didn't quite work for me.<br.>
Al Wiliamson - seems to improve and make me love anything he touches - besides Spider-girl.<br.>
Paul Neary - Can't stand his vertigo/dc work but can't get enough of the cover art he did for Marvel video games and comics, even Ninja Turtles.<br.>
I finally got about 15pgs of sequentials and a color cover up on Deviantart to show. More to come.<br.>xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-74219640210786909642015-02-17T19:09:00.001-08:002015-02-18T05:25:44.548-08:00Unused layoutsThese were not used but are kind of cool to see anyway.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through penciling a 120pg graphic novel. Which is going well and I'll be posting pictures soon. Just finished first new Outcast Angels work as well - first color images for that series. More to come, stay tuned.
Pages 3-5 of the actual pages (from comixology's preview) turned out like this, just to compare.

Here's my thumbs for the Red Sonja contest. Lots of diving into battle behind a shield. The one similar to the one I chose, I abandoned because I think I saw one like it in a Conan mag by Simonson or Frank Thorne. Sonja looks so much like the girl from New Teen Titans.

I ended up having to add her scales, change her boots and gloves etc. I was inspired to try this full pencil shaded version after seeing the process for Jenny Frison of Revival. <br.>

Then the Hildibrant brothers as I was collecting their Marvel Cards and the Shadows of the Empire cards they did. <br.>
Some artist I've really loved over the last few years I don't think I've mentioned yet are listed below. In fact most of my collecting these days have been centered around these artists now and anything and everything they've done.<br.>
<br.>
Chris Sprouse<br.>
Giannis Milogiannis<br.>
Becky Cloonan <br.>
Danijel Zezelj - I haave no idea how this artist goes about their work. It almost looks like sillhouettes that are cut back into with whiteout - very distinct and interesting. <br.>
Cully Hamner<br.>
Paolo Rivera<br.>
Marcos Martin<br.>
Michael Hawthorne<br.>
Kyle Baker in his late 80's/early 90's style on the Shadow or the Dick Tracy movie adaptation - his more cartoony stuff and new Tank Girl does nothing for me.<br.>
Shawn McManus on Dr. Fate 80's <br.>
Marshall Rogers on Batman<br.>
And I've really enjoyed these messy covers by Frank Terran<br.>
Frank Thorne<br.>
Aron Wisenfeld<br.>
Hugh Flemming - I find him even more interesting than Dave Doorman/Drew Struzan - he has a much more ground level approach to his angles that make even the most photoreferenced Star Wars cover seem like a brand new deleted scene etc.<br.>
And for some reason I've come to learn that while I've known his work all my life from art in the Chris Hart how to books Gray Marrow's art is so flat it drives me nuts. I saw a story he did for Dark Horse for the Aliens franchise that was just not his thing.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-44492483432230250152014-09-22T18:10:00.001-07:002014-09-22T18:17:19.351-07:00Robyn Hood Samples Inking WIP<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2LgGn3D16Y0/VCDHVKNUZMI/AAAAAAAAB18/kBOAJ8KRVgY/s1600/2014-05-22%2B07.31.27.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2LgGn3D16Y0/VCDHVKNUZMI/AAAAAAAAB18/kBOAJ8KRVgY/s320/2014-05-22%2B07.31.27.jpg" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KhA9uPezL0k/VCDHVAsG21I/AAAAAAAAB2E/MBAAy2T1d3c/s1600/2014-05-22%2B07.31.33.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KhA9uPezL0k/VCDHVAsG21I/AAAAAAAAB2E/MBAAy2T1d3c/s320/2014-05-22%2B07.31.33.jpg" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nlxCttlmZmU/VCDHVRexhCI/AAAAAAAAB2A/d1spXUNH_pg/s1600/2014-05-22%2B07.31.53.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nlxCttlmZmU/VCDHVRexhCI/AAAAAAAAB2A/d1spXUNH_pg/s320/2014-05-22%2B07.31.53.jpg" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ud-A3euhhmU/VCDHV0ktLGI/AAAAAAAAB2Y/QYAV_293l-o/s1600/2014-05-22%2B07.32.03.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ud-A3euhhmU/VCDHV0ktLGI/AAAAAAAAB2Y/QYAV_293l-o/s320/2014-05-22%2B07.32.03.jpg" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zm9yxJNuJS0/VCDHWMhfoSI/AAAAAAAAB2I/W9pPzQsOu3k/s1600/2014-05-22%2B07.32.08.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zm9yxJNuJS0/VCDHWMhfoSI/AAAAAAAAB2I/W9pPzQsOu3k/s320/2014-05-22%2B07.32.08.jpg" /></a>
Some work in progress images I don't usually remember to take as I ink. I usually work all my pages at once and use one tool/technique at a time. Here it's mostly only the brush work that's been done. Usually go fat to fine.
Also just got invited to a Wizard World show and have a lot of original pages from the last few years I'm looking to sell. So I hope to see you guys at one of the shows. Been working behind the scenes this last year, doing a lot of plotting and writing. And trying to find peace in the chaos that is an artist's life. Changed day jobs and moved too. Check out my DA page for the finished versions of these pages.

I even ended up doing another layer to add the Clydesdale's hair around it's hooves but don't have that pictured here. The final version looks like this

I’ve been writing up a storm and drawing a bit. The blog was turning into a hyperlink for my Deviantart and I didn’t want that to keep happening. I’ve been feeling less public as I’ve kind of felt the double edged sword of having so much online, had some art stolen/copied and spread around. Which is really kind of disheartening. The sketchblog I was a part of fell off the face of the earth. I needed to rediscover loving drawing and it turns out I love laying stuff out, it’s my favorite stage. Anyway, I thought these pieces were ok,<br.>

and I’ve been having a lot of fun doing splash page illustrations for Outcast Angels. heres some of the rough thumbnails.

<br.>The ship (not for lack of trying) ended up having to be 4 layers, background, light rays (which I painted black and inverted in photoshop) and ship and splatter texture. This afforded me the luxury to invert the ship layer (making the lines white) and shift the black ones (infront of the white lines) just over to the right and down – making it look like every line had a highlight and stand away from the background. <br.>

Below are some of my designs for <a href="http://atypicalcomics.wordpress.com/">atypicalcomic’s Takedown</a> which I did a while back. I liked the motorcycle which I tried to give a batman ’89-eske jet engine. And a very nerf inspired gun.<br.>

I was just on the TMNT podcast as part of the Incompetent Comic Cabal Cast (IC3). Which you can listen to, <a href="http://www.comiccabal.com/">here</a> (summarizing the first 4 tbp’s of the idw series in about 45 mins).
<br.>
i also got mentioned on episode 145 of <a href="http://www.uncannyxcast.com/">Uncanny X-cast</a> for doing a piece of art for one of the hosts and drawing the hosts into issue 2 of decisions for <a href="http://cosmictimes.net">cosmic times comics.</a> <br.>
I had fun at Denver comicon and got very fast with drawing portraits, which was fun and I was surprisingly accurate for about a 1-2 min sketch.<br.>
I’ve also been trying to cobble together Terra Novus a podcast radio-drama I had written and recorded with a full cast of students back in 08/09. I have a new audio engineer who is doing sound effect and levels but outside of the first few eps the actors were all recorded separately so putting all the lines in order has been somewhat painstaking. My hope, as we approach October is that I will be able to post episode 1 by the end of the year, I have the dialog put together for all of them but that’s only half the battle.<br.>
I’ve been plotting & writing a bunch of comics issues to get ready to draw and pitch. The thing is I’ve been working on all of them simultaneously which has been slow to have something to show but at the same time I’m able to work on problems/plotlines subconsciously while I write one’s I’ve figured out. Then when I get it, I switch to that script – in about month binges/segments or so per series. Keeps each fresh and I think that will show in the writing.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-40927669767607940492012-12-28T21:10:00.002-08:002012-12-28T21:17:57.241-08:006 MONTH ABSENCE IN REVIEWMIKE VOSBURG I first noticed inking “Dames of the Atomic Age” that I picked up at Denver Comiccon last year, but his work is even better when he is drawing. I rescently saw the first FREE issue of Retrowood he is writing and doing the art for Asylum Press. And after taking off the “letterboxing” and altering the options to show the full page upon a page turn, Comixology reads just as I read a print comic and is great. I did like this noir comic over other similar first issues I tried as well for free such as Fatale & Thief of Thieves. He has a flat look, reminiscent of Walt Simonson in how it is inked, really only switching between thick brush strokes and pen-like lines. Similar to and yet wholly different from an artist I cannot stand named Gray Marrow. Who has the same flatness to his work but his layouts are much more tame and I can’t quite put my finger on his work but it has actually angered me starting all the way back to my first drawing book – the (of course) Chris Hart written, “How to draw comic book heroes and villains” which can now be found on google books. <br>
Frank Thorne is another artist I’ve come to really appreciate recently with an issue of Ribbit. He does Elfquest-esk faces but his layouts, black placement, and inking really intrigue me. Very European looking to me, and his figures are much more of a 60’s female body which I find much sexier than today’s comic archetype. Especially how the stomach and hips are handles and the curves that are put in it. <br>
I was rescently lucky enough to get my hands on a few of the old Conan and Rook Marvel magazines for 50 cents a piece, including an oversized issue in color that is about as big as I draw. Much of them are John Buscema which is great, the rest are hit or miss but mostly amazing. Especially my first exposure to Alfredo Alcala, who reminds me of some of the things that turn me off about Doug Braithwrighte and David Finch in that the figures are second to the lines. But some of the pages where it isn’t about the figures is where he really shines. <br>
Chris Samnee on Thor was very enjoyable in a great, kids-friendly way.

I’ve been watching Arrow and while it barrows A LOT from what makes Batman popular it has been pretty good, where I found Smallville unwatchable, much like the most recent Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence.<br>
One movie I was really looking forward to was PROMETHIUS – and while it has the scariest scene I think I’ve ever seen in a film and yet all the subtlety of the sexual metaphor of the Xenomorphs is all but gone. And much of the questions the plot that had so much potential but just squandered it and ruined, especially in the third act what could have been a great movie. Though I’ve heard much of Lost Writer, and now Batman Tales of the Dark Knight writer Damion Lindeloff was to blame and that things were better explained and made since in the original script.<br>
Speaking of scripting I found the blog post on the Rules of Pixar plotting pretty insightful, if not just reinforcing of what I’ve heard before. I thought Pirates Band of Misfits was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years, done my Ardman Studios – famous for Wallace and Gromit. Their new short “a matter of Loaf and Death” was only 30-minutes and I thought it was better than the Curse of the Wererabbit and as good as most feature-length animations. There are many allusions to other movies, famous scenes, shots etc. Great writing all around. So that is moving up my list while another company I used to love has been falling into obscurity – Studio Ghibli.<br>
While still technically perfect, Tales of Earthsea, Ponyo, the Secret world of Ariety are all movies that I just can’t relate to. I suppose I’m not the target demographic anymore, I enjoyed Lupin the castle of Cogliostro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Totoro, the Cat Returns and especially Princess Mononoke. I just find these new ones, boring, uninteresting, retreading artistically, and somewhat unfulfilling story-wise.<br>
<br>
After the theater shooting here in Colorado and other life events I never got to see the Dark Knight Rises. I kept myself almost completely in the dark, but now that I’ve seen it I have to say I’m one of the ones who loved it. Probably more than the Dark Knight which I raved about when it came out on this very blog. Though the politics people read into the movies still surprises me, I wouldn’t put it past Nolan and his brother to include as I find them some of the only guiding lights in entertainment today. The one thing I wish was different, and I’m not the first to mention this, is I wish they wouldn’t have shown Bruce at the end.<br>
That same comment was made on an awesome Podcast I’ve started listening to called Now Playing. Others I’ve found and loved recently: the Deceptionists, Fuzzy Typewriter (who did an awesome Aliens 3 episode, going over the various widely different scripts), Extra Sequential (the only one I don’t tire of), Books and Nachos, and Now playing co-host’s Marveliscious Toys (though I only listened to his Marvel movie book adaptation reviews). Science fiction book review podcast (SFBRPC) has some great book/audiobook reviews that I basically listen for the plot summaries.<br>
<br>
I’ve also been getting and listing to a lot of radio drama’s: Batman Knightfall, Life Death and Return of Superman, Star-wars Shadows of the empire, the Thrawn Trillogy, Star Trek Imzadi (by Peter David), and even Graphicaudio’s two-part Batman No Man’s Land – which blows the rest away. I’ve now ordered a few more from them.
You can find Batman the Lazarus Syndrome for free on the Batman Adventure Podcast, but that has been the weakest of the bunch. It is fine but the ending jumps the shark in so many ways just to tie up the plot quickly and neatly.
<br><br>
Shadows of the Empire really has been the only Star Wars story that has really captured what I liked about the original trilogy. I’m one of those that can’t get invested in Star Wars if its not the original characters, so when I found the Star Wars infinities comics I was very happy. Extra Sequential’s thoughts on their Star Wars episode of the podcast hit my thoughts pretty much on the head and I’ve really enjoyed the Red Letter Media review/critique of the prequels.
<br><br>
I have been able to finish reading “Miss don’t touch me vol. 1” and enjoyed it. I’ve been slugging my way through Crisis on Infinite Earths about an issue every other month for the last year. I have to say while I acknowledge George Perez for being so consistant, and the book being a feat because of it’s details- the consistency in his art, is, to me, a turn off. Like Steve Dillon. The only one who I can get by with is Michael Golden because it still has an energy to it the others don’t. Though the Chris Sprouse way of inking it so precisely and cleanly does kind of kill it for me, though I love Christ Sprouse. There have beena number of Artists that I have liked so much that I’ve started getting quite a massive collection of their work, but noticed that after a certain point something clicks and I understand them too well. There are no more surprises in their work, JRJR and Kelly Jones have become that for me. However going backwards, JRJR’s work on daredevil with Al Williamson inking him are among my favorite comics ever, and surprise me with every issue.
<br><br>
Speaking of Michael Golden, his Jackie Chan’s SpartanX the Armor of Heaven has some awesome helicopter scenes which inspired, in part some of the ending of From Blood issue 2, which I just finished penciling. I also was inspired by The Punisher 75, and the illustrated screenplay of Terminator 2, the art of the Matrix book etc.
I started using hotwheels for my reference but there is a big vehicle chase at the end that I eneded up having to use sketchup and find models on the warehouse.
<br><br>
I’ve also realized that both Yurushi and From Blood have the main character’s arc going from a violence and trying to become a peaceful one. This is the main difference I see between this and books that I could see it (From Blood) as being compared to, like Luthor Strode (drawn by my friend Tradd Moore). I didn’t even realize it till I was almost done drawing the second issue, but I think that character arc resonates with me because I think self-control is the highest mastery. I think that is why I hold the book/movie Dune in such high regard when so many throw that movie in the mud. The scene where he has to stick his hand in the pain box and the Revered Mother explains it as a test to see if he is an animal or a man - which is something I constantly struggle with of in my day-to-day life.
<br><br>
I kind of based Tim off of Alan Moore and Doctor Harold after Frank Miller. In both issues there are flashbacks to Tim being more well-shaven in which case I based him off of what Dolf Lungrend/Jean Claude Van Damme look like these days. Reese also takes a change in the second issue to look a bit more mod/indie and less doctorly.
<br><br>
Issue two also features A LOT more Swat Policemen – Which only make a brief appearance in issue one. So keeping them consistent with issue 1, I kind of realized I was recreating what I remembered the early 90’s Jurgen’s Metropolis police to look like from the first issue I ever remember having Superman #59. I also tried to include a minority I a major role, the same reason I was trying to get on-board with Batwing when DC relaunched, but I can’t stand the decompression in comics now. I read the comic in 10 minutes or less and the art, just like I mentioned with Finch and Braithwrighte is technically well executed it has the worst layout. <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3US53AuOMRU/TnAKMTGFOWI/AAAAAAAABRw/N2CLRaN84do/s1600/batwing+in+action.jpg">This</a> page for example, what is going on with the lower half of the left side of the dps? Absolutely nothing!
<br><br>
I’ve also gone through some bouts of becoming obsessed with dreaming up some plots including my version of a Justice League Reboot in which I tied all their orogins together and redesigned the costumes, combined some characters. I also plotted what my Predator vs. Tarzan story would have been and did a montage page of art – both of which can be found on my Deviantart page.
<br><br>
My and my 9-year-old brother redesigned Glory for the Project Rooftop blog, recently.

As I mentioned on my previous post I’ve been contributing to James’ on-again off-again sketchblog Keepitfreshsketchblog.blogspot.com

I’ve also went through online and rewatched the most memorable episodes of the Batman the animated series from the 90’s. I seem to remember a character that I can’t find, that I thought was an alter-ego of two-face where he had a hanging mask that only covered half his face. I thought it was somewhere around the third season, once the style got very geometric, but I think I might have been misremembering the episode Judgement Day. Other episodes I fondly remembered were:<br>
Sideshow<br>
Holdiday Knights<br>
You scratch my back<br>
Bane<br>
Pretty Poison – My favorite for the image of Poison Ivy growing babies in plants and the 50’s horror movie feel the episode has.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-49029384102491635202012-12-06T20:48:00.002-08:002012-12-06T20:48:28.737-08:00keep it freshI know its been kind of quite on here but I've been posting some of the 41pg From Blood # 2 on my Deviantart page and have been doing a lot of sketches to keepitfreshsketchblog.blogspot.comxaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-73828760123347172632012-09-07T17:23:00.000-07:002012-09-07T17:23:17.709-07:00Breaking story - swiper no swiping! So someone finally broke the story to<a href="http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/09/06/seth-reedy-a-new-rob-granito/"> bleeding cool</a> with many more pictures than I had access to when I went off on him. But now everyone knows about Seth Reedy and his "free hand drawing and inking skills" and man, he was doing it to everyone.
Finally getting going again in the comics world, I'm about 1/4 of the way done with a 40pg issue I'm working on. Finally got a script approved I'd written the rough draft of over a year ago. I have a penciler finishing an issue I wrote and an inker working on finishing them out. I got to see the first version of my friend Hobbes' story that I got to ink about half in a very fun style. Got to see the first print version of issue 1 of No West to Cross #1, all while the rest of my life has gotten considerably more complicated. All in all I'm doing pretty well.
Really been enjoying listening to Now Playing podcast at work and their film series retrospectives.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-29628078974319145942012-08-05T14:01:00.006-07:002012-08-06T16:49:50.986-07:00Art Theif?I had my own gallery article this week on http://themedes.org/ The mission of the site is to discuss "Social Injustice." So I got to talk about some of my more controversial pieces and what I was thinking going into them. You can use the dots at the bottom of the article to scroll through the pieces and the word balloon icon at the bottom left to view "artist comments." The website has a very minimalist/concept oriented navigation and has recently been redesigned. Here's a screen cap of one of the four pieces I had this week.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hZQCZ6x3sXo/UB7PnhN0IsI/AAAAAAAABW4/8FMT9hbQAf8/s1600/medes%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="187" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hZQCZ6x3sXo/UB7PnhN0IsI/AAAAAAAABW4/8FMT9hbQAf8/s320/medes%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
I was also informed by an anonymous email user that an "artist" in Australia was re-inking over my inked art and not being up front in saying that it wasn't his drawing.
This brings me to the larger issue of gallery sites like deviantart. I want to share my art with the world at large but people will screen cap instead of buy, use the art as their own to get a job or copy large portions of a smaller artist's work to shortcut their own, assuming the artist is not and will never be well enough known to find out, especially someone in Australia. I pursued the matter and it would seem that I was fired up by his brother in some sort of family fued.
The part that really set me off was he even mentioned that he would not take pictures of "his" art straight on or post scanned images because of the same process that he is using to steal from me and others like me. Its so meta in the worst way.
Anyway, I was very rude and angry and somewhat out of line. I would have been flattered (as Heath -the penciler- was) If he would co-sign the piece, or put my name up front with Heath's but he would only mention it if someone asked and even then only to say that the "free hand drawn" pieces were "not his idea entirely." Some may see it as a gray line but I definitely don't. Some of my friends do similar things and it angers me, I guess it's a function of the "breaking in" of the business. Unless you are huge, chances are you won't ever see if someone is doing it and there isn't really a way to know.
I've also been contributing to http://keepitfreshsketchblog.blogspot.com/ recently.
Super psyched to of heard the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire audio drama, after trudging through the Thrawn Trilogy everyone hails so much. Also, excited to hear the Batman: Knightfall and Superman Lives adaptions by BBC radio as well as get the Batman: No man's land adaption by graphic audio sometime in the future. I've recently discovered the podcasts: Science... sort of, the deceptionists, fuzzy typewriter, and Books and NachosxaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-78415469827708062512012-07-19T16:31:00.003-07:002012-07-19T16:52:19.842-07:00The Medes and Nerd NationI was on another episode of Nerd Nation where I talk about my upcoming projects, the podcast <a href="http://www.blogtalkradio.com/nerdnation/2012/07/13/legion-of-substitute-hosts-featuring-martin-pierro">here</a>.
I also won the Medes contest at Denver Comic Con for a piece of art that highlighted social injustice and it is featured on their website. Hover over the glasses on the right side of the screen for the menu and click on my name. The website has a very original design and navigation. You can see it here.
I also realize that I kind of went off on some things in my last post, and I think that's good. It's the opinionated reason I read other's blogs. This week I've been irritated with the trend of having character lose a family member or loved on as the inciting incident or in the first act of the movie/story etc. I've been listening to "the deceptionists" writing podcast and enjoying that and trying to get someone to make either an Aliens or Predator audio drama, there are none! And I find that extremely odd because I think they could be great. Especially an adaptation of the Steve Perry novel/comics trilogy, Earth Hive, Nightmare Asylum, and Female War - which follows on the heels of Aliens for an out of continuity alternative history. It sounds great, and I would love to hear them since each character/franchise really has some very iconic music and sound fx associated with them.
I've also joined another sketchblog after the last one peetered out. This one is called <a href="HTTP://keepitfresh.blogspot.com">keepitfresh.blogspot.com</a> and I've already posted for the Spider-man movie and Saga.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204319106368527826.post-14036304560919853292012-06-04T23:16:00.002-07:002012-06-04T23:17:50.004-07:00Shakespeare and Manga"Brevity is the soul of wit" - meaning be brief and efficient - and in media I take it to be - "don't waste my time." It is a problem I have with most all media today. Especially tv and movies (a lot of anime specifically), and comics (a lot of manga specifically). Its been called a post-literate or a-literate world, a world of instant gratification, visual and not written information, and for that reason stretched out stories. What old creators used to do in one issue now takes an entire tpb to do, and makes them that much more from each unnecessary additional issue. I think the format of manga is made to make you feel like you are gaining progress, like a pat on the back as you read. you seem to get so far in so quickly that you can't stop because you've read so much - but you haven't. There are usually 3 or fewer panels per page, all with one or less word balloon that probably has less than six simple words in it. I am speaking in generalities but when there is so much of something its easy to do. Every manga is a series, and I don't mean 6 issues, I mean volumes upon volumes, bookshelves long. And most Anime is not feature film, it's a series, not 13 episodes like a season of tv in the states but 20-60-300 episodes long. And you watch them waiting for the 2 minutes per episode when the budget blows up like a fire cracker and spend the rest of the time in anticipation and disbelief of how little could happen between those scenes and in the 1/2 hr and episode takes place. I have enjoyed my fair share of anime, manga, comics and movies but what I can't stand more than anything else are those that take for granted your effort to experience them. That save anything interesting till next issue, episode, after the first hour of the movie etc. That thing will go on the cover guaranteed, then you will read, watch etc a good portion that doesn't involve it and if it all possible probably totally avoids the thing they've conceitedly dangled in front of you on the cover to get you to read it. It's the worst! Its so disrespectful to the reader and I feel like a cow being pushed through the gates in just the way they want me to with no way to turn around or make a choice. If your lucky they give you just enough at the end to get you to forget how bad it was the entire rest of the way so that you'll do it again next issue, or hour of the movie, or episode. And now they've got you invested. Now you don't want to stop because your hoping your effort was all worth something that will help you overlook all the mistreatment instead of just giving the reader what is advertised and moving on from there. Now I bashed anime/manga a lot just there, but no comics are more famous for using the cover gimmick than american ones. Sometimes featuring something that doesn't even happen in the issue or ever. Marvel used to put spider-man's head in the upc box just so kids would pick up issues thinking he was in it when he wasn't. People that say, oh just wait, it'll get good soon - keep going are the worst. If it was good it would have been already. I appreciate a good start/hook to a story as much as the page turn, but some of the stuff today just seems like the page turn. No payoff, just incentive to keep reading and not stop. I could go on but I needed to atleast point out in the ironically not brief post, that creators, writers, readers. we deserve better. maybe this economy and this tough time on the arts is good and will make companies only put out what is good from the start, because you might not make it to a second season if you don't give us something worthwhile in the first or even first couple episodes as we've seen recently. So don't hold out just assuming we're so incredibly interested in your amazing story that we'll wait till the end to get anything else but filler and fluff. The journey is more important than the destination, and readers/watchers especially need to make their voice heard, we don't have enough time for it to be wasted. If you're not getting what you set out for/payed money for/or tuned in for/ stop, turn it off, return it, or just get it from the library. We vote with our money and time, and in these days, choosing to stop something and realize that it's not turning up, is just as loud of a vote as tuning in to see if your interested. if the creators appreciate you and there is something there, you will see it. if not, call their bluff and move on. your time is precious, so dont let anyone tell you/sell you/or write otherwise.xaqBazithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00719501789403374325noreply@blogger.com0
